Brilliant Directories and eDirectory both offer dedicated directory software with paid listings and member management. The useful choice depends on your actual billing workflow, required customization and the offer you can purchase. Neither platform is automatically faster or more profitable.
The offers below were checked on November 3, 2026. Compare the exact edition you would buy: eDirectory cloud and its source license have different operating responsibilities, while Brilliant Directories advertises several purchasing routes. A cheap entry price matters only if that edition covers your workflow.
Compare the actual deployment models
eDirectory is a dedicated product, separate from WordPress directory themes and plugins. Its official FAQ distinguishes managed cloud service from a self-hosted source license. The cloud provider handles infrastructure, updates, backups and basic security hardening.
With a self-hosted license, those server responsibilities move to you or your hosting provider. That choice can suit an organization that needs specific infrastructure or extensive custom development. It also requires a realistic maintenance budget and someone responsible for applying updates.
Brilliant Directories includes hosting in its advertised plans. Its public plan page also describes developer tools and source access, while the tiered offer places full developer customization in Pro. Ask which access your chosen offer includes before assuming either complete freedom or a completely closed system.
eDirectory's source-access documentation also has boundaries: a small licensing-related portion is obfuscated, and native mobile application source is excluded. Source access is therefore a licensing and customization decision. It does not mean every component is open source.
Read the offer before comparing prices
Brilliant Directories has different public offers. Its Brilliant Directories public plans currently lists $97 monthly and a $997 one-time website option. Check which features and ongoing services are included in the offer you select.
The separate Brilliant Directories tiered offer lists Essentials at $40 monthly or a promotional $240 yearly, Builder at $80 or $480 yearly, and Pro at $120 or $720 yearly. These offers have different capacities and included features. Confirm the selected route, renewal terms, taxes and extras at checkout instead of combining every headline into one universal plan.
For example, Essentials distinguishes 5,000-member capacity from 500 included instant business records. Those figures describe different resources. An imported-data allowance should not be presented as the maximum number of members the site can hold.
The eDirectory pricing page lists Professional cloud at $99 monthly, Enterprise cloud at $199 monthly and an Enterprise source license at $1,499 once. Professional retains eDirectory branding; Enterprise cloud is white labeled. Hosting, support and later upgrades for a source license need separate attention.

Test the complete membership workflow
Brilliant Directories documents recurring membership prices, signup forms and gateway configuration. Its membership documentation explains that gateway choice changes collection behavior: some external gateways generate an unpaid invoice rather than automatically attempting the charge. A recurring price alone does not prove automatic collection.
The gateway setup guide requires appropriate processor credentials and configuration. Account eligibility, processor charges and currency still matter. The advertised absence of a Brilliant Directories platform revenue fee does not eliminate payment-processing fees.
eDirectory also documents paid memberships and gated content, including recurring and one-time billing. Ask both vendors to demonstrate signup, renewal, a failed payment, cancellation and the resulting access change. Compare those results against the rules you actually intend to sell.
Customization and daily administration
eDirectory provides a widget-based page editor and a listing template editor. Its page-editor documentation reserves some custom-widget functions for Source License. Check the exact feature you need on the edition you are evaluating.
On either platform, prepare one realistic listing with your actual fields, category structure and required images. Have someone unfamiliar with the administrator account try updating it. Record confusing steps instead of assuming that a large feature list means easy daily administration.
Which option fits your project?
Consider Brilliant Directories when its hosted membership workflow matches your needs and the confirmed offer covers the resources you expect to use. Consider eDirectory cloud when its directory layout and managed service fit better. Consider its source license when a concrete hosting or customization requirement justifies the additional responsibility.
If you only need a small free list without member accounts, postpone both purchases until you have checked a simpler publishing option. Software capacity does not create demand for paid listings. Speak with prospective members before treating any subscription as a revenue forecast.
Before migrating an existing directory, list the data you must retain: member fields, categories, photos, billing relationships and public URLs. Request a sample export and a documented import plan. An available CSV button alone does not prove that subscriptions or search visibility will transfer correctly.
Questions before committing
Can I try Brilliant Directories without a credit card?
The trial signup page advertises seven days with no credit card required. Confirm the functions and expiry behavior in your own trial account.
Does eDirectory require me to manage a server?
Its managed cloud option includes infrastructure management. A self-hosted source installation creates different responsibilities, as described above.
What is the useful next step?
Give both vendors the same listing, billing scenario and export requirement. Save the written offer and unresolved questions. Buy only after that small evaluation confirms the workflow and total commitment you need.
